We often hear the phrase Work - Life Balance which refers to the balance between work commitments and personal well-being. It involves the effective management of time, energy and attention to ensure that work commitments do not overshadow other key aspects of life such as family, health and leisure.

But can there really be distinct dividing lines?

Especially if you run your own business, personal and professional lives are constantly intertwined.

When these two worlds collide or get out of balance, it is important to assess the situation and follow certain steps that will help you regain much-needed stability:

1. Acknowledge the imbalance without judgment

Do a reality check and look at the situation. Do you often need to talk on the phone for work on the weekends or at family times? Do personal or family issues keep you distracted from your work? Do you find it difficult to be away from work or even when you are away, are you still dealing with business issues?

2. Define your priorities

Recognizing your personal values will help you in setting priorities. What really matters to you? Is it quality time with your loved ones, your career advancement or money? Write them down.

3. Control your time

Monitor how you spend your time. Create a weekly calendar, noting work hours, family interactions and personal activities. Identify patterns and areas where there is a lack of balance.

4. Set boundaries

Setting clear boundaries will contribute enormously. Make your working hours known to family and friends. Similarly, protect your personal time from work interference. Turn off work-related notifications on evenings and weekends.

5. Assess your emotional well-being

Take a step back and listen to how you feel. Do you feel stressed, exhausted, content, or are you so overwhelmed that you can't take it anymore? Emotional clues reveal the reality of balance. Seek the help of a coach if stress or burnout persists.

6. Assess your physical health

Listen to your body which is sending signals through aches, pains, headaches, fatigue or sleep issues. Regular exercise, proper nutrition and adequate rest are non-negotiable practices that will complement other actions to regain balance.

7. Review your professional goals

Align your current situation with your long-term ambitions. Can you accept there will be hardships along because you are "building the foundation" for tomorrow? Examine your values and see if and how they have changed, also considering adjustments or career changes if necessary.

8. Prioritise self-care

Remember, self-care is not selfish but necessary. Schedule time for yourself. Moments of digital detox, solitude, relaxation, concentration or meditation, nutritious food, hydration and sleep. A well cared for self performs better both personally and professionally.

9. Seek support

"If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go with other." The importance of support is significant. Ask for support from mentors, friends or community members. Talk to a coach and share the reality you are experiencing. Sometimes, an outside perspective sheds light on blind spots.

10. Adaptation and repetition

Change doesn't happen all at once. One step at a time leaving a short period of adjustment is the best tactic. Implement the change, review how it serves its purpose and adjust accordingly. Remember to be supportive of yourself.

Achieving a healthy life balance is not based on perfection but on conscious choices. All that remains is to try to implement them.
